There are many links within 30 minutes:
here is
Brunswick Golf Club
which is one of many fine courses within a 30 mile radius.
The Brunswick Golf Club was established in 1888 by Brunswick Republicans, we believe the original name of the club was actually "The Republican Club." The first written reference of the golf course was in 1898 when the first Annual Patriots Day Tournament was held. The course was originally only 9 holes, but one of the finest in the country designed by the excellent team of Stiles & Van Cleek, and because of the superb natural drainage, Brunswick Golf Club was always the first golf course open in the State and the Patriots Day Tournament was always the first Tournament, which is still held annually to this day.
If there is an older golf tournament in the
United States , we certainly don't know about it. If you are reading this history and do know of an older golf tournament please let us know the details. In the early 1960's the course was extended to 18 holes, the new nine designed by the World renowned Geoff Cornish. It was a little different from the original, bringing some water hazzards into play with a couple of forced carries. Equipment was improving fast so the new nine was built much longer and had a par of 37 which brought the total par to 72, a generally favored improvement. The fourth hole was beautifully designed and is still one of the most visually stunning and utterly challenging par 3's you'll ever play. When Mr. Cornish designed the 6th hole he probably asked the question "Will I ever design a par 4 as good and as difficult again?" Once you have played it you will understand when I say that the answer is, no.
