Shop and Explore or Relax and Unwind
Freeport has retained its quaint 18th century small-town ambiance by restoring rather than destroying many of its historic buildings. Shops and restaurants occupy these once stately homes and businesses and line Main Street, where pedestrians have the right-of-way (a Maine state law!). It's a refreshing change from the boring sameness of suburban malls.
But there's plenty more to discover about Freeport, beyond the shopping of Main Street. Freeport "off the beaten path" is catching rays on sandy beaches, climbing rocky coastline, boating around scenic islands and bays and hiking on salt marsh paths.
Shopping
Over 170 designer outlets, specialty shops and world famous LLBean are just a few minutes walk from Kendall Tavern's front door. Antiques, collectibles and used book stores can be found within a few miles of downtown, as well as in the neighboring towns of Brunswick, Bath and Yarmouth.
Our map and directions "button" has a google search map!
Two of our favorites, Broad Arrow Tavern and Jameson Tavern, are within walking distance. Both feature local specialties like steamed lobster and New England clam chowder, fried Maine clams and fresh haddock, as well as steaks, pasta and salads. Quickly becoming another favorite is the Azure Cafe, a new-comer to town featuring an imaginative, tasty menu, upscale surroundings and a comfortable bar with outside seating.
Varied cuisines are well represented in town as well. Chinese, Japanese and Thai foods are available, and the Old World Gourmet can provide the perfect picnic lunch for your day trip. Be sure to check out their dinner restaurant Conundrum if you're a pasta and wine lover! Gritty McDuff's is the best place around for handcrafted brews and pub fare. Broad Arrow Tavern is also a favorite in Freeport.
Short Trips
Two miles south of Freeport is the coastal village of Yarmouth, home of one of Maine's great annual celebrations, the Yarmouth Clam Fest.
Five miles north of Freeport is the town of Brunswick, home of Bowdoin College. Explore this historic town on your way to Bailey Island and a great lobster dinner at Estes Lobster House.
Further north, the town of Bath is known for it's exceptional museum chronicling Maine's maritime history. The Maine Maritime Museum is a must-see for lovers of the sea.
Enjoy birds? Enjoy feeding birds? Enjoying watching birds? Enjoy backyard birds and wildlife? Then, this is the place for you! From seed to binoculars, feeders to gifts,
The Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth is "Your Ultimate Backyard Nature Store."
